Africa

HCW has been continuously in Africa since 2000. We have worked in tandem with allies in Sierra Leone the entire time. We have worked in close collaboration with African Bishops of the UMC in Sierra Leone and all across the continent, and established connections with government officials and civil society leadership in the fields of child welfare and global health.

Our primary partnership is with the Sierra Leone Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, and its programs. Our other alliances in Sierra Leone grew out of our connections with the community of care working to transition institutional care to family care, and others came through Together for Global Health, an HCW managed coalition of health providers, primarily faith-based organizations like HCW, and others that were absorbed through the merger of Compassionate Birth Network with Together for Global Health.

Growing out of the UMC connectional ministries, and an alliance between two UMC Pastors, we have a long-standing alliance agreement with three programs that we helped them to found and establish, the Child Reintegration Centre, Mercy UMC Hospital, and the Missionary Resource and Training Centre.

Our growing relationship with HIRF, another faith-based NGO like HCW working in Sierra Leone, is one of the clearest indicators of our attitude about the value of allyship, and an example of how collaboration ensures that the children of Sierra Leone have sustainable, local sources of continuous care.
